Installation ATI Catalyst driver on Wheezy

(11/12/2013; update)

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian explains thoroughly how to install ATI Catalyst driver in various versions of Debian.

(09/09/2012;)
12.8 doesn’t support X.Org 1.12.3 yet.

Debian package build failed on my system complaining missing file or directory like this.
cp: cannot stat `/home/penguin/catalyst12.8/fglrx-install.cK76Vl/x710_64a/*': No such file or directory
Package build failed!

This page explains thoroughly how to install the driver.
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian#Installing_from_Debian_Repository

$ wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-8-x86.x86_64.run

amd-driver-installer-12-8-x86.x86_64.zip is the right file name. Or you can download here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx

In worst case of scenario when X.org fails to start, run /usr/share/ati/amd-uninstall.sh –force
in terminal mode. Of course it happened to me because I’m running Wheezy. It will remove all the files of Catalyst driver.

A solution

The simple way I found is to run the installer as root in either X.Org or terminal mode.

I downloaded amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.zip file here.
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/12-6/amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.zip

$ mkdir ~/Maintain/catalyst12.6
$ cd ~/Maintain/catalyst12.6
$ unzip ~/Download/amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.zip
$ chmod +x amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run
$ sudo ./amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run
$ sudo amdconfig –initial -f

Close X.org and reboot.
